Reflection Week 5

Dear Mom and Grandpa,
I want to start off by saying thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys have been there for me and helped me when I needed it. I cannot believe how time goes by, it felt like I was in middle school not that long ago.  Well I am pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor I can remember when I told you both that I wanted to become one. You both told me to stay focused and do not let anybody or anything stop me. I thought that I was going to be at college for no more than ten years, boy was I wrong. I am in my second year of college still taking all the general ed and major classes that I need to transfer. I have decided to major in Biology and have a minor in Ministry. I also decided that I want to transfer to UC San Diego with a AA degree. Talking to counselors has helped me know what classes that I need to take. Most of the time that I will be spending at Fullerton College is focusing on Math and Science classes such as Physics, Calculus, Statistics and many more. When I get to UC San Diego I will be focusing more on getting in to Med School. For many years I debated what kind of doctor that I would like to be I went from wanting to become a Surgeon, to a Pediatrician. How did that happen? Well I took a Child Development class my senior year of high school and I was interested a Pediatrician does on a typical day. I had a chance of doing more research on becoming a Pediatrician and I loved it. Well I know you both are happy to hear that I am still in school with all the things going on, but I thank God that I have you guys there for me.

Reflection Wk 4

There are many roles in my education as an adult learner. I have a lot of responsibility as a learner such as making sure that I am being taught the right material, and learning material that meets my needs. I go to school so that I can learn about the basic skills in life such as Reading, English and Math. Making sure that a teacher not only teaches the right material but, explain it and make sure that students understand. Having the class participate in discusssions can help people to feel comfortable in a classroom. I have experienced that first hand when one of my teachers asked the class to discuss what they thought in groups. Then we went over the material in class. Teachers should ask for feedback on their teaching because it can help them improve in areas they lack in. When a teacher has rules or guidelines for the class it is my responsibility to make sure that it is current. I am supposed to check for any materials, such as books that I will need for the current class.  In class self assessments are useful because it helps me to know what areas are my strengths and what needs to be improved. As an adult learner it is my responsibility to make sure that I am learning effictively. How can I know if my learning is effective? Having a understanding of the material taught. If I have any questions I am able to ask a teacher and not feel any type of penality of it.

Reflection Wk 3

I have learned a lot in reading class this semester. I learned that if you organize your time to do things it does help. Managing my time has been challenging for me because I might have one thing planned, but then something happens. To get back on track with everything I will postpone it until the next day or I will forget about it. This is the first semester where I had to have a calendar for what I am going to do for the up comming week. Things in life do not always go as planned, but it is good to have an idea of what you are going to do for that day, week etc.  I am going to study a lot, that might mean that my going out with my friends over the weekend will not happen. My friends will understand because most of them are college students too. I am relieved that school is almost over and  I can not wait. All of my big projects have been completed, Thank God because they had stressed me out. Since I have been a full time student semester it has been hard for me to spend time with my friends, let alone my family. Sometimes I feel bad because I won't see my dad or sister because they are working and I am at school. The only time we all catch up with eachother is at the table. We talk about everything such as what is going on in the word, to how our day was.  I feel so drained by the end of the day, I am debating whether to be a full time student next semester. Spending time with my family should not have to be planned because we all live together and if we are all at home we will watch a movie or go to a resturant. Nothing can stop me from completing all my work this semester, so I am going to push myself even harder.

Reflection Wk 1

This semester has gone by so fast, I can not believe that it is almost over. My motivation this semester has been like a rollercoaster because I have gone through a lot. There are days when I feel like comming to school and learning something new. Then there are those days where I feel like I am wasting my time and feel like I have a long way to go in school. Some of the things I do to stay motivated are think of everything that I have accomplished until this point, why would I want to give up now?. Since my mom was diagnosed with a sickness it has been real hard for me to stay focused. I think of what is going to happen to her and who is going to be there to take care of her. My mom is not as bad as other people who were diagnosed with her illness. I want to earn a degree from college, but with everything taking it's toll on me I feel pressured. I have learned a way to balance things while I am usually at school for a few hours my sister will take care of my mom and then we will trade off.  I also want to make my mom proud of me by staying in school because that is what she wants me to do. As long as I have faith in God I know that he will help me to remain strong through this difficult time for me.

Reflection Wk 2

Studying the vocabulary has been better for me since I've learned vocabulary stategies such as Graffiti, Subjective Approach to Vocabulary (SAV),and Semantic cards. The semantic cards have been useful for me because I learned the word and I was able to define it by memory.Another thing that helped me was finding the context clues with ufamiliar words that I have never heard of before because I do not have to look in the book to find out the word. I can figure out the meaning by the context clues within the sentence or paragraph. Studying vocabulary is something that I did not like doing before, I would only study the words when I had a test or quiz comming up. Most of those words I learned in my other classes have gone out the window, but not completly. When I was having a converstaion with one of my friends from High school, I heard her say a word that seemed familiar. The word was gullible, it was funny because I said to myself "I know I heard that word somewhere", it was one of my vocab words. Vocabulary is an important thing to know because you do not want to sound dumb when you are having a conversation with other people. Since I have learned different techniques on how to study and remember vocabulary words, I will use them when I need to learn a new word. Everyday you can learn something new it could be a new vocabulary word or something someone tells you.

Reflection

This semester I have learned a lot of things in reading that I did not know before such as SQ3R. I find the SQ3R strategy useful because it helps me to understand the reading better. Using highlighting and note taking as I am reading helps me to know what information is important. I won't have to go back to reading the whole story or section because I took notes while I was reading.I noticed since I have applied SQ3R to my English class and I ended up getting a A on my test, I am now going to use it when ever I have to read. I have also learned what kind of learner I am by taking a little class test. I am a visual learner,I learn hings by seeing them and I also like to study with a group of people. In class we discussed how to find the main ideas and how to find them and where they can be located. What also found useful was Subjective approach to Vocabulary (SAV) because if I studied the vocabulary it would take me longer, where as using the flash cards I can remember a picture or a sentence I used as an example. Also knowing what motivates me to keep going to school is the career I want and how I am going to keep myself motivated which is by hard work and not giving up when I want to. I find the things that I have learned in reading are very useful to me because I can apply some of these things to my everyday life. It can help me become a better and effective college student. I am glad I have learned these things because life to me is learning experience.
